Jailer

This position is responsible for tasks pertaining to prisoners that do not require the service of a police officer.

Major duties include:

• Receiving, photographing, and fingerprinting prisoners as necessary.
• Maintaining prisoners' personal property.
• Maintaining the security and well-being of inmates confined to the jail.
• Performing custodial duties in the upkeep of the jail and associated areas.
• Transporting or releasing prisoners to officers for transportation to court.
• Obtaining and serving food to prisoners.
• Providing commissary service for prisoners.
• Maintaining prisoner money accounts.
• Laundering jail uniforms and blankets.
• Transporting work release prisoners to and from work sites.
• Administering prisoners' medications.
• Operating all technical equipment to secure officer and inmate safety to include body scanners, cameras, Central Square, LiveScan, MULES.
• Maintaining records of property released to parties other than inmates.
• Monitoring inmate telephone calls for bonding purposes.
• Processing bonds for other agencies; maintaining accurate paperwork for court.
• Maintaining accurate paperwork for sentenced inmates, work hours, commissary, etc.
• Maintaining CPR certifications, knowledge of first aid.
• Taser and OC (mace) certifications.
• Knowledge of radio communications, use of radio policies.
• Operating jail control room equipment. Training new employees on operation.
• Maintaining log of inmate allergies.
• Communicating with doctor/nurse with medication procedures; transcribing orders; administering insulin; blood sugar checks.
• Transporting federal inmates to court or doctor/dentist appointments.
• Overseeing federal inmates with video court appearances.

Knowledge required by the position includes:

• Methods and techniques used in the control and custody of prisoners.
• Department policies and procedures.
• Laws and regulations concerning the privacy and security of criminal justice information.
• Performance of custodial duties.
• Operation of laundry equipment.
• Operation of a prisoner transport van.
• Oral and written communication skills.

Minimum qualifications include:

• High School diploma or equivalent.
• Valid driver's license.
• No felony convictions.

Shifts will be days, evenings, and nights. Applicants selected to participate in the hiring process will be required to participate in a written exam and interview that is by invitation. Interested candidates will be notified prior to the next exam date and time. Interviews will be held later that same day.

Salary per hour $20.10, plus a generous benefit package.

• Bi-weekly pay periods.
• Thirteen paid holidays per year.
• 96 hours of vacation – accrued throughout the year.
• 96 hours of sick leave – accrued throughout the year.
• 2 days of personal leave per fiscal year. Must be employed on July 1 of the fiscal year to receive.
• City paid monthly premiums for health and dental insurance – Employee only.
• City paid monthly life insurance for employee only (1 times annual salary up to $50,000).
• Optional group term life insurance purchased at employee's expense.
• Optional vision insurance purchased at employee's expense.
• Voluntary deferred compensation plan – not matched by the City.

• Total compensation value (Hourly starting rate plus benefits value) for this position is $29.23 hourly.
